Musgamagw Dzawada’enuxw Tribal Council Question Who is Protecting Who?
In Full Support Of the Fish Farm Occupation, Call Upon Senior RCMP To Intervene

Campbell River, BC – October 3, 2017 – In the view of the Musgamagw Dzawada’enuxw Tribal Council (MDTC), the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) are working with Marine Harvest to shut down a public protest by our First Nation peoples within our Title lands. They have neglected any of the occupiers’ safety concerns, and have recently arrested one of the nations’ hereditary leaders. These actions indicate the RCMP are appearing to be in cahoots with industry.

The Musgamagw Dzawada’enuxw Tribal Council fully supports the occupation of the Midsummer Island fish farm by its members, and others there in support. Let it be known that the people on the front lines are there with the blessing of both the nations’ political & hereditary chiefs and their communities, both on and off reserve.

Marine Harvest fish farms have been occupied by members of the Musgamagw nations for the last month, including their sites at Wicklow and Midsummer Island. They have indicated that they will remain so until the industry has removed all open-net farm sites from their traditional waters. Midsummer is a main point of contention as Marine Harvest is midway through restocking. If this is allowed to proceed, it will allow the company to be there past the expiry of their current license of occupation. Essentially, if DFO and the Provincial Government allow this to happen they are unofficially renewing those licenses, without the consent of the MDTC membership.

To date, the RCMP have not yet responded to an incident involving Marine Harvest workers armed with knives arbitrarily confiscating a banner owned by the occupiers on September 27th. We are utterly disappointed in the recent RCMP conduct where a Hereditary Chief was arrested in relationship to a small length of rope. The Musgamagw Dzawada’enuxw Tribal Council is hereby requesting a meeting with the top level of Senior RCMP officials to rectify this absurd situation.
